Unhappy Private Seller sold me a lemon

I bought a car from my sister's friend almost a month ago. My sister was originally supposed to buy the car for $500 but decided that she didnt want it. I needed a second car for my family so i jumped on the offer. My only problem was that I didn't have the money just yet. When I inquired about the problems with the car, I was told that it needed a tune up, the windows fixed, a couple of nix and dings, a new tire, and a new hood, but otherwise the car was in good condition. As I was trying to come up with the money, her friend was telling me that he had already purchased the hood, had it put on, replaced the tire and that it had recently had an oil change and not to worry about it. He showed me the sticker on the window for the oil change as well. By the time I came up with the money the price had been moved up to $800 because of what he had just put into the car. I gave him $500 and told him I would pay him back when I got my next check and I did. He gave me the title and told me that he had the car for about a month as well but didnt have a change to switch the title over but i would still be able to take it to DMV. Well about two days ago the oil light came on, the car was making a loud tapping noise, and cutting out while driving it until it finally wouldnt move past two feet once it was started. I had to have a friend help me push it to a parking lot. My wife looked up the noise on the internet and it said try and oil change even though I was told it had one recently. When I went to change the oil I had discovered that there was but two drops of oil in the car. I filled the car up with oil hoping that it would resolve the problem but the tapping persisted, plus the engine is shaking violently. Plus I was told the tire he supposedly replaced was rotted and needed to be replaced. Had he told me about the oil I could have gotten to it sooner before I had engine trouble. I know the guy as well and never thought he would deceive me. There has to be someway to get my money back. I know the car the needed little work but now were talking in the $1000 plus I paid for repairs that were not repaired. What can I do?

Let me ask you something first: Did you discuss this situation with the "friend" who you bought the car from?
