I live in a 3 apartment house. I recently found out that electric from the basement and hallways is on me. I am paying for all the Verizon boxes and other light fixtures in the common hallways and common basement.
The landlord has just given us a rent increase and we told him we did not want to pay the increase until either he fixes this problem or he does not raise us and we just leave it as is. He wants us to pay the increase. Its been a month now and he has not gotten back to us on what their intentions are in solving this problem. We told them we have been paying this additional electric for 4 years.
What recourse do I have? He wants this new increase January 1st and I really do not want to give it to him. I wanted to put it in escrow but I am not sure that is allowed by NJ law other then to fix things that are harmful to you.
