Hey all, having some problems with our new landlord being kind of "picky" about the place we moved into. We moved in a few months ago and have paid rent in full and on time since we did, so no problems there. However when the landlord came to inspect the apt. last week they complained it was "not the way they wanted" and they didn't consider it "clean enough". The apt. was NOT dirty, no garbage anywhere, was NOT cluttered, etc. It had some newspapers and stuff on the kitchen table, some clothes on the bathroom floor from my son taking a shower that morning, stupid crap like that. It was the normal stuff you would see in a "lived-in" apt! There are 4 adults living here and they are in and out at different times during the day so things are not always perfect. Well, the landlord didn't like that and told us it was to be "spotless" at all times. And then proceeded to threaten me by saying "leases CAN be broken" and if we didn't have things "straightened out" when they return in 30 days we can be evicted. Last I checked, that is complete crap, and as long as we are not breaking any laws (we're not), they cannot just threaten us and try and have us evicted because they apt isnt up to THEIR standards. Also, they did NOT notify us they were coming that day, just showed up and said they wanted to see the apt. I said fine since I didn't think there were any problems with the cleanliness of it! Doesn't the covenant of quiet enjoyment protect us from (a) them just showing up and demanding to see the apt, and (b) trying to force THEIR "standard of living or cleanliness" on US, as the lease gives US sole possession and does not give them the right to dictate how we live?? I'd like some answers to give them when they return to quiet them and let them know we know OUR rights as well and will not sit by idly and let them try and ride roughshod over us and harass us with frequent inspections and complaints because they don't like how it looks. Any links to references that I can print out would be great as well. Thanks all. I'm sure others out there have had to deal with this garbage before.
