My township has told me that they understated/misbilled my real estate taxes for the last nine years! They are telling me that I owe something like $50,000! They explained to me their error, and I understand somewhat, but don't agree with everything they are saying. Can they do this? Can they really go back nine years? I will lose my house.
I'm not sure of this answer. It would be in your best interest to seek help from a real estate attorney (and ASAP). If it is legal for the township to recover the unpaid/unbilled taxes, then you may want to refinance and pay the taxes.
Did you put an addition or upgrade the house and after the reappraisal, the township never billed you?

You may be able to sue the town for negligence for being so dumb as to screw up your taxes for the last 9 years. Also, there may be a statute of limitations on how far back the town can collect taxes.
I think here no one guide you much, if you have this serious problem then i suggest you that you should contact any lawyer for good & quick suggestion.
Yup, what he said!
