We hired a contractor to add on a sunroom to our house. It took a little longer than promised. Upon the final inspection the inspector told us the windows were too low. The bottom height of the window is supposed to be 24" when the room is over 6' above the ground but ours were only 20'. It is my understanding that the engineer of the room is responsible for making sure it meets all building codes. We are being told that the only thing the contractor can do is to put a bar on all of the windows that is 4" higher than the base of the window. We are not especially enamored of the idea as we feel it will detract from the look of the room and take away from the resale value, both reasons for having the room built.

What sort of legal recourse do we have? Can we legally ask for the entire room to be rebuilt according to code? Do we have to accept the bars? Should we try to get some financial remuneration? Any help would be appreciated.

Yes, the contractor is responsible for complying with all building codes. You can sue the contractor for breach of contract, consumer fraud, etc. Tell him you want it fixed correctly or else you will sue.
