Hello everyone!
I live in NC and my deceased father lived in NJ. He had a small estate and everything has basically been settled for myself and my 2 siblings. My brother was incarcerated and is now out of prison. He was left a bank account (a CD) and his portion of the estate. We all assumed that it was put with the CD already in effect. My brother (Who lives in Georgia ) has no idea which bank this account is in. The lawyer who did the estate will not give up this information and will not tell anyone anything. My sister has recently tried to find out but they will not give out info. How can my brother get this information so he can transfer his money or do what he wants with his inheritance which is still in a bank in New Jersey somewhere ??
Thank you in advance to whoever can enlighten me!! PS this is a great website!! NC has nothing like this!!

Do you know if there was a will and if so did it go through probate? If there was a will and it did go through probate then the NJ Superior court in the county where you father lived shold have a record of that information. You should call them and see if they have any records.

thanks for answering. Yes there was a will but I doubt very much if it went thru probate because stepmother used her lawyer and we did not question the will ( too ignorant). All my brother wants to know is where his money is. thank you

If you father died with a will then the chances are almost 100% that it went through probate in the county court where he resided. You need to call the probate division onthe New Jersey Superior Court in the county where you father resided. They will have have these records.
