I would write a letter to DMV documenting the entire situation. Send it certified mail return receipt requested. Keep a copy of the letter. By doing this you are laying the groundwork for a lawsuit. If they don't fix the problem and you continue to get stopped by the cops then you can easily sue the DMV. And the DMV deserves to get sued because they are the most incompetent state workers in NJ.

They have to clear the plate for you. It is your property and they are interfering with it by labeling it as stolen in their system.

You should write the letter to: Sharon A. Harrington, Chief Administrator, New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission, PO Box 160, Trenton, NJ 08666.

In the letter you should include the police departments that ran the plate for you. Also include the telephone numbers of the police departments so DMV can call them and confirm your story.

Send the letter certified mail. This should clear things up for you and you are also laying the ground work for a lawsuit if they don't. Keep a copy of the letter and certified mail receipt.

Lester, thank you so much. I'll let the forum know how I make out with DMV.

Good thinking. I didn't know about restricted delivery so thanks for teaching me something new. You are laying the groundwork for a lawsuit should you encounter the same problems with your plate in the future.

The big question here is why the cops did not originally tell you they get their data from NCIC and and not the DMV. You may have solved this puzzle a lot earlier if you knew this.
